Cracker Noodles

Cracker Noodles

Here is a picture of one of my favorite meals growing up. This is a ridiculously easy recipe from the early 1970's. My mom often made it when my dad was working at the fire station. We always had it with Kielbasa but you could serve cracker noodles with whatever you choose.

Other than salt and pepper this recipe uses only three ingredients. Egg Noodles, Butter and Club or Ritz Crackers.

ingredients for Cracker Noodles

Start by putting water in a pot and bring it to a boil on the stove top. The most important thing is that the water covers all the noodles. Since we have 4 cups of noodles to boil I would estimate I used between 6-7 cups of water. Maybe a little more or maybe a little less.

salt added to boiling water

Add salt to the boiling water.

If I am being completely honest I always add salt to pasta water. I am not sure why but just go ahead and do it because my mom added salt to her pasta water and I am pretty sure if I asked my Grandma Lola she probably did too.

Once you have added the salt to the boiling water go ahead and add the egg noodles. I have only used egg noodles for this recipe so I am not sure how regular pasta or rice would work. But you could certainly give it a try! Boil for 5-7 minutes.

Once you have boiled your egg noodles for the specified time they are ready to be drained. Drain the noodles but DO NOT run water over your drained noodles....ever.

noodles being drained

Can you believe that in 4 minutes you will be finished with this meal? The next step is to put the stick of butter in a pan. Start melting it and then add your drained noodles to the pan. Sprinkle pepper over the noodles in the pan.

noodles, butter and pepper

Gently use a spoon, fork or tongs to mix your noodles and butter to combine. Once everything is hanging out in harmony add in the crackers.

adding crackers to the noodles

It's so easy! Once again mix to combine. Let the crackers and noodles soak up some of the butter. I want to make a note that I don't add additional salt to the noodles on the stove top as the crackers have plenty of salt on them for the dish. And, just like that you have a meal ready to go!

Missy's Notes for Cracker Noodles

  1. I used club crackers but you could also use ritz crackers. Soda crackers don't work well in this recipe.

  2. This recipe makes 4-5 servings. If you need more just double the recipe.

  3. Kids love this recipe!

  4. Even though I make very good cracker noodles my mom made the best!
